Orchid Plaza Shopping Centre was built in 1985, as Cairns’ newest and most prestigious shopping complex. Launched with fanfare and to acclaim, the two-storey complex was a hub for locals and visitors alike, who appreciated the ambiance, design, convenient location and diversity of experiences available.
These features have stood the test of time and continue to attract a loyal following. Orchid Plaza’s convenient inner-city location makes it a hub for city workers and domestic and international tourists.
The centre is particularly popular at lunchtime. With a focus on serving an array of first class Asian cuisine, Orchid Plaza Shopping Centre offers a plethora of dining experiences across its two levels. The upstairs food court area features Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Korean outlets. There’s also the ever-popular Sushi Express (upstairs at Orchid Plaza) and two Japanese restaurants, including Yokozuna.
Orchid Plaza Shopping Centre occupies two-storeys and is a walk-through arcade, connecting Lake and Abbott Streets in the Cairns city centre. The upper level is easily accessed via two sets of escalators or an elevator. The centre provides visitors with general amenities, including toilets with disabled access.
The heart of the centre is opened up, quite literally, with a central atrium providing line of sight and flow of air and light between the first and second storeys. Architectural features, including glass balustrading, raked ceiling beams and drop down banners add to the sense of style and space.
Each of the shops is air-conditioned, while the light and airy heart of the complex is cooled by natural breezes, circulated with the addition of ceiling fans. There’s plenty of seating provided and the tropical nature of Cairns city is brought into Orchid Plaza with a range of potted plants.
Orchid Plaza Shopping Centre offers all visitors FREE WIFI. There’s plenty of off-street parking all located within convenient walking distance of the centre. Open 7 days a week (closed Christmas Day) from 8am until late, Orchid Plaza is the place to meet.
